Guided tour of Medieval Pontremoli

Guided tour of Medieval Pontremoli

Labirinto di Pontremoli

A guided tour through the Middle Ages in Pontremoli, a medieval town on the Via Francigena, discovering the most important medieval monuments including bridges, towers, dungeons and fortresses.

Lhe guided tour of the Middle Ages in Pontremoli in Lunigiana, upper Tuscany, begins at our Guides Office. Come visit us at our Sigeric Point, 10 Ricci Armani Street in Pontremoli.

With Sigeric's Tour Guides we will visit the historic bridges of Pontremoli. Pontremoli's bridges are points of passage for medieval pilgrims and travelers along the Historic Routes that connected Europe to the Mediterranean. Not only the Via Francigena, but also the Via degli Abati and the Via del Volto Santo drew, over time, the Lunigiana and all its villages. Indeed, we will move from the Jubilee Bridge, the first crossing point of the Magra River, to the Ponte Stemma, the municipal emblem along with the medieval tower.

Next, we will reach Piazza della Repubblica, where it will be possible to visit the basement of the Palazzo Comunale. In the medieval period, the Municipal Palace of Pontremoli was located about 3 meters lower than the current ground level of the Pontremoli village. Still visible in the square is the central tower of the Cortina di Cacciaguerra (which the people of Pontremoli know as Il Campanone), a 14th-century fortification.

The history of the Via Francigena and Pontremoli well emerges by visiting the Diocesan Museum located in Piazza Duomo, where we will learn about the roots of Christianization in Lunigiana.

Afterwards, the route continues through the village of Piagnaro to end in the castle courtyard, where it will be possible to continue independently or with a guide with a tour of the outer sandstone walls and the fortress ramparts.
