S’ummer is the perfect time to venture beyond the usual tourist routes and discover hilltop medieval fortresses, breathtaking views and tales of ancient knights. Whether you’re a history buff, a legend hunter or simply on the lookout for the perfect shot to post on social media, here are the must-see castles to add to your summer itinerary.

Towering over the valley, Fosdinovo Castle is one of the best-preserved fortified complexes in the entire region. As you walk along its ramparts, you can enjoy a breathtaking view stretching from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inside, you can still sense the splendour and mysteries of the noble Malaspina family, including the famous room that once hosted the great poet Dante Alighieri and the legends of the ghosts said to haunt the castle. Climbing up through the narrow stone-paved alleys of Pontremoli, you reach Piagnaro Castle, a stone sentinel standing guard over the Via Francigena. As well as admiring its defensive architecture, the Piagnaro houses the valley’s most precious and mysterious treasure: the Museum of Lunigiana Stele Statues. It is open every day from 10.30 am to 6.30 pm, and in August from 10.00 am to 7.30 pm.
